Happiness Is A Warm Gun |
Nice to see The Beatles are finally playing with their streaming toys, and even noticed a shout out from William Tell on the roll call, yes Tell I am very happy to see such Good Vibrations, though the whole Fare Thee Well went right over my head, I mean the whole point of the band, or at least 78-point-6 percent of it was the Fat Man Rocks, and yes I am wondering why my next favorite band - YES, is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, maybe adding Allan White had a lot to do with it, he was like Bill Bruford's drum tuner who suddenly got the gig of a lifetime and no real jazz chops to show for it, always the same drum fill every freakin' time, and poor Bruford hitching his wagon to Robert Fripp, must have been an eye opening experience in the science of "Great Music, now take seven years off and think about it." Happy 2016 and more to come on these and other issues...

Re: Happiness Is A Warm Gun |
Hey Capn, here's to a happier new year for all of us hereabouts...and I couldn't agree more about the state of R&R these days...I have always been a few yrs "behind", and in fact, that's why in 73 I loved the DEAD of a few yrs prior, and so on and so forth. But, in the 80s (THeads, Police, Clash) and 90s and even early 2000s (White Stripes, etc), I could always find bands that I enjoyed via my kids...but not so much the past five yrs. The emphasis on vocals is fine, without much in the way of hard rock or alt stuff that does much for me...but, that's okay--there's plenty from yrs gone by to "rediscover" for the fourth or fifth time.

But what is "rock and roll" exactly? Talk about subjective. A few hundred years ago folks wold have said Mozart was serious heavy metal. Each generation has put that label on different music. While there are bands we here would mostly all agree on as being real "rock" bands, you ask someone 20 years younger and they may not agree. It's all good. As long as my kids are taking Tool or the Dropkick Murphys over Ariana Grande, I'm happy.
